Vista "sleep" issues

I'm just curious if this is a rather common problem with Vista or what... Typically I'll suspend my laptops so they'll be ready for me in class. Well too many times I've closed the lid only to realize it never goes to sleep. And when I open it, nothing happens. All lights are on, but the screen remains black. All I can do is shut it down by holding the power button...

All in all, it's nothing more than an annoyance... But is it typical or is there something up with my shiny new laptop

Review the power profile options in the power management section of the Control Panel. Sounds like it's failing to come out of standby mode or you need to create a new power profile. Microsoft has released a patch for the failure to return from hibernation mode in Vista found at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928135/en-us

Some other issues found with Vista and sleep mode with additional links is seen in the article at http://neosmart.net/blog/2006/vistas-hideous-wakeup-support/ Give the patch a try there to see if this is Windows related or a problem with the unit itself. It does sound more like the article details there.

pc eye both of thoughs articals are on hybernation, this is on sleep. and yes i get that, not too often but it buges me i loose all my work that i did.

Hibernation, sleep, standby all add up to basically the same thing since you are bringing Windows back from an inactive state instead rebooting or starting the system up whether portable or desktop. Laptops use the standby type mode far more often unless in the work place to conserve on battery power there.

Like all previous versions of Windows the first year or so sees all the bugs no matter what you think about any one version. Here while the desktop is up on the other the profile is set to never go into standby or sleep mode. In XP that would be using the "never" setting there for display, drives, etc.. Hopefully one of the patches referred to there will clear that up.
