Failing drive or possible rootkit infection. Might have to do some diagnostics on the drive.

Do you know what brand of hard drive you have? To run malware scans you would have to put the drive in another system and scan that way.

Go into the BIOS and look under Hard Disk on the main information screen. The first few letters of the model number will tell you.

Ok a bit of progress, if I leave the computer long enough it eventually gets to my desktop, it seems as though it's working just very very slowly., anything I try to do just takes ages and I mean like 30 mins to just get my mail up to look at. I don't think I can connect to the netizen tried to run c/cleaner and it just sat there for ages, I tried to run avast scan and the same nothing seems to happen, I have managed to copy some of my precious files across to an external drive but have more to do before I try anything like a factory reset so if anyone has advice that would be great
Thanks bill

Again either rootkit infection or failing hard drive but I'm gonna assume more of a rootkit infection. If you can boot to safe mode and run the following.

Please download and run TDSSkiller

When the program opens, Click on change parameters, click on detect tdlfs file system click ok then click on the start scan button.

TDSSKiller will now scan your computer for the TDSS infection. When the scan has finished it will display a result screen stating whether or not the infection was found on your computer. If it was found it will display a screen similar to the one below.

To remove the infections simply click on the Continue button and TDSSKiller will attempt to clean them or remove them.

After trying to clean them it will pop up with the results of the scan and its actions.

Please reboot the system if asked to do so.

After running there will be a log that will be located at the root of your c:\ drive labeled tdsskiller with a series of numbers after it example, C:\TDSSKiller.2.4.7_23.07.2010_15.31.43_log.txt

Please open the log and copy and paste it back here.

Hi thanks for the reply, does this have to be done in safe mode? As everything seems freeze when the drivers are loading at "aswrvrt.sys"
Having said that it takes so long to boot up in normal mode, maybe it's freezing at the same place in normal bootup ?

It will work in either safe mode or regular mode. If its actually freezing on the file then its Avast.
