Vista upgrade to Win 7

My mom's laptop is a HP Pavilion dv2000 with Windows Vista on it.

I get frustrated when I need to show her how to do something on there just cuz I don't have much experience with Vista. I know a lot of people hated the User Account Control or whatever it's called that ended up going on to Windows 7, but there's something about Vista I don't like and I don't know what it is. It's not user friendly for people that need a user friendly OS and it requires unnecessary steps for someone who does not need a user friendly OS. Maybe that's just me.

I would like to buy my mom the Win 7 upgrade. But these days I don't know if the upgrade is likely closer in price to the full version. Also, it's been so many years since I've done an upgrade (I think it was 98 to 2K Pro) that I forgot if any files are deleted. My mom is a teacher and has a ton of Word and Excel and Powerpoint docs for her students, so losing all that info would be catastrophic. I'm not getting paid for this. She's my mom =)

Any helping hints would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Windows Vista and Windows 7 are basically the same as far as the GUI is concerned, so it's not really worth spending the money on the upgrade.

What specifically don't you like about it?

Just buy the OEM on Newegg for $100. And it's no big deal to backup all the documents and wipe the machine. You get a better result with a wipe and fresh Windows install.

I don't hate it. I guess it's just that I never had my own computer, laptop or tower, that I bought myself for myself that had Vista on it. Both my mom's here and my dad's laptop about 40 minutes from here, have the Vista OS on their laptops. I know that a lot of people said that Vista was crap, but I don't agree with them just cuz I'm going with the crowd. Maybe if I put Vista on my PC and logged into it every day for about a month I'd discover what it is I really don't like about it or if, like you said, it's basically the same as Win 7.

Newegg, okay, I get most of my stuff from there. Actually blocked Newegg on Avast about 2 weeks ago so I couldn't go there anymore =) Lol. Spend too much money on that site for stuff I don't need =)))

If I got Vista for myself for experience, should I put it on VirtualBox or what? I've never done a dual-boot. I'll read the sticky on that for now. I don't like missing operating systems and learning nothing about them. That's why I can't say for definite that I hate Vista or not cuz I don't actually own it myself.
