I just ordered a copy of Vista Ultimate from Newegg: Item Here

If I decide I'd rather install x64 version, is that doable? I've heard each disk has both versions included and the key can be used on either or. But I noticed Newegg gave each version a different item number.

Thanks in advance for any feedback on this.

Mmm, I don't think it will work because you'll be getting a key for a 32 bit version and I don't believe keys are interchangeable from one version to the other. But I could be wrong.

And keep in mind that your free upgrade to win7 has to be the same version and language. So, if you'll end up with a 32 bit version of win7.

Vista Ultimate Retail versions come with both 32bit and 64bit install discs.

OEM discs come with only what is stated.

You cannot install 64bit Vista Ultimate with the product you purchased.

i thought all keys are good for x86 and x64?

I don't know if it is allowed, but you can try using the key you get with the x64 insatallation (ultimate comes with both discs) and if it works then microsoft are stupid for making the key cross compatable. either way, they don't lose out, both cost the same :P

If you can't then you will have to either settle for x86 or return the product to newegg and ask for a replacement x64 version

Hard to install a 64bit version if you don't have the disc.

You are 100% correct. The disk that I received contained only the 32-Bit software.

I did go ahead and use the free coupon to order the correct upgrade. According to MS site, it will ship no later than 11/5/09.

Has anyone heard any scoop on if a clean install will possible with a Win7 Upgrade disk as it was with the Vista upgrade?

Thanks to everyone for the excellent feedback on this thread!!

Yes, but not exactly the same.

You will need an activated version of Windows already installed in order to use the Upgrade media for a clean install.

Really? I heard that the RC version of Win7 would be considered an activated copy. I hope this holds true.

So, let's say you're running Win7 for a few months and your drive crashes. You get a new drive, you'll have to throw your old version of windows (i.e. - Vista) on the new drive first, activate it again, then install Win7 upgrade?

The Release Candidate is considered an activated copy, but will only work until it expires next June.

That's exactly right, yes.

Man, I really dislike upgrades. I wasn't too upset with Vista's upgrade disk as all you had to do was install it twice. And it seems that MS didn't hide that fact either.

You're still installing twice, so no great loss really.

And you're right, they were aware of it, and they didn't
hide it, but they've fixed it. :(

True. I guess I liked the Vista upgrade because you weren't "upgrading" from one OS to another, you know? It was installing a clean copy of Vista, then installing the same OS over that clean copy.

I don't know....just being paranoid, I guess!

Oh r-e-e-a-a-a-l-y? Hmmm, that's awesome to know.

I reckon it'll let you activate the newly installed OS with the Upgrade key provided.

Thanks for the info BTW!

I wouldn't think so. You'd need the key for the previous version in order to activate, then install the Upgrade.

If I'm understanding you correctly.

I see. Guess we'll all know the scoop for sure when it's released, huh?

Thanks for all of your help and replies on this thread, Bodaggit23.
