I just replaced my GeForce 8500 GT with a PNY GeForce 9800 GTX+ and now my computer won't boot properly. It gets to right after the progress bar and then the mouse appears, disappears, and the whole screen stays blank. As I understand it, after the progress bar is the point Windows stops using the built-in software display and the hardware kicks in, hence the problem.
The computer boots fine in Safe Mode, and it recognizes the card in the device manager (although it doesn't see it in the dxdiag).
Everything was fine when I first installed the card. I put in the installation CD that came with it and installed the drivers (it installed DirectX 9, which I thought was weird since even my old card uses DX10). After it installed the drivers, it reset my computer. After that, it would not boot correctly.
I went into safe mode and installed the latest nVidia drivers (185.85) and also updated my mobo BIOS.
Everthing works fine when I put my old card back in.
UPDATE:
When I completely uninstall the drivers in Safe Mode (Device Manager > Display Adapters > Uninstall > check 'Delete the driver software for this device') I can boot normally but without the nVidia drivers. I did this and installed the latest nVidia drivers and I was back to the same problem
The drivers Vista wants to install also cause the boot problems.
That's progress, right? Now I just need to find drivers that won't bork my computer.
