Vostro 1000 Ram

I have a Dell Vostro 1000 with an AMD Sempron 3600 1.99ghz processor. It came with two 512mb Ram cards and I recently bought a single 2gb card bringing the ram up to 2.37gb, I have noticed it is a little faster, but still not enough for what I need. I used ramxp pro and it shows that there is still around 1.6gb free of ram when running several programs. So now my question is would it make the computer any faster to get another 2gb ram card to bring it up to 4gb? Or is it the processor that is not fast enough?

XP doesn't use more than 2gb of ram for a normal user. So upgrading to 4gb will not make it faster, in fact it may make it slower. If you have 1.6 gb free memory with lots of programs running then there is no need to get more memory.

Is there anything else I could do to speed it up? mostly for sound recording and hd video, or would that be the video and sound card?

You could perform a disk defragmentation which would better organize all your files. Also you might need a better video card I didn't check if this desktop came with integrated GPU or not. I hope this helps. Also as John mentioned there is no use in upgrading your RAM. Which applications are you running at the same time? Are they ressource intensive?

the video card is an ATI Radeon Xpress 1150 256MB HyperMemory, it works okay but when recording or playing back hd videos it gets choppy and there is a little delay. I'm not sure what video cards are compatible with this laptop or if there are any upgrades available

Also, I would advise to uninstall the program called ram xp pro as these programs usually cause more issues then anything. If this is a laptop, there isn't much you can do with it. I expect your issue is with the single core sempron processor. You would need to get a better laptop I would think.

I don't usually use the ram xp pro software I just installed it temporarily after I installed the ram to see how much was used, I would like to just buy a new computer but I don't have the extra money now. So i'm stuck with this haha, just trying to make it work better for now

So it's xp itself that can only support 2gb ram? if I upgraded to vista or windows seven technically it could support more ram?

I never said that XP can only support 2gb of ram. I'm saying that a normal user will never need more than 2gb of memory if they run XP. XP 32bit can supports up to 4gb of memory but only about 3.25g is useable. You said you had 1.6 gb of memory free when running a lot of programs. That tells me you have enough ram already and whats holding you back is the single core sempron processor.

Oh okay I get what you mean, thanks johnb35! I found that this laptop actually had the option of the Sempron 3600+ or a Turion 64x2 TL-60 upgrade, so i'm thinking about doing the upgrade and seeing how the dual core processor will speed it up
