Ok, now I am deciding my new gaming/top rig, so I need your opinions.
Should I either

- Get Yorkfield 45nm Q9450 in January, and wait for x48 and ddr3's later in the year (possibly around March)

- Get Yorkfield 45nm Q9450 in January and get p35 with ddr2

- Get Yorkfield 45nm Q9450 in January and get x38 with ddr2

Motherboard will either be from Gigabyte or Asus

Current spec -
- Western digital Raptor
- X-fi sound card
- Evga 8800gt (Will get 9 series later next year)
- Ocz GameXtreme 700W

Please pick 1, and explain why.

P.S I can always upgrade to x48/ddr3 in the future, but is it really worth it? Might cost an extra $350

I say you get DDR2 obviously theres going to be more technology coming month by month, so just get the best one you can now...
 
Yeah, I was planning to get option 3 as well. I guess I will get x38/ddr2 and later upgrade to x48 and ddr3 once ddr3 gets more stable, which probably won't happen for a while till mid next year imo.

More opinions are always great. Thank you
 
Oh boy it's a tie. This is what I was thinking

Get x38 or p35 and get x48 later mid next year.

So I need to know which 1 I should get. x38 or p35.

I would get the 45nm processor in January (if thats when they actually come out), and an X38 board with DDR2. You can get much more performance for the price with DDR2 memory.
 
ddr3 has latency problems which cause gaming to suffer.
who knows when this will be resolved.

best to stick with ddr2 for now. get some dececnt ram.
ddr3 isnt needed anyway as its such a new platform and motherboards that support it are only coming around the market now.

remember, hardware is miles ahead of software. so what ever you go with will be great for at least 2 - 3 years.
 
2, becuase p35 is cheaper, and only requires a bios flash to work with 45nm, but i guess an x38 would be better if you are afraid to flash...
 
Just to clear some things up:

1 - By then, DDR3 latencies will be lower, 45nm will be a bit cheaper, and X48.. is unknown for now.

2 - Perfect for a "right-now" build. DDR2 is great, and should last a few years. The P35 chipsets were strong and run well. Only a CMOS flash is needed.

3 - Perfect if you envy excellent stability with 45nm processors, due to a native support.
 
Two is the best option if you want to build now, but also want the X48 chipset. Why pay $$$ for an X38 when X48 is right around the corner? The P35 is much cheaper.

As for right now, I don't see any gain from the X38 to the X48... P35C-DS3R can be a GREAT alternative. DDR3 and 45nm with a BIOS flash.

That board only supports DDR3 speeds up to 1333 MHz. DDR3, due to the high latencies, isn't really useful unless you're running speeds > 1600 Mhz. Besides, we don't know enough about the X48 chipset. There could be advantages we're unaware of.

ah crysis is only dying due to graphics cards.
not due to ram or cpu's.


i was referring to non gaming software. vista, dvd encoding, music editing etc.
the software thats available cant take full advantage of current hardware.
