Wake On Lan (Tip of the day)

Hello all,

I was browsing the computer forum today, and someone mention the magic packet and "wake on ping". When I read the phrase I was shocked that I had not heard of this before, thought maybe it could help some of you out there as well.

Wake on ping, Wake on Lan, WOL, are all the same thing, and can be very useful. The options allows you to boot your pc from the OFF position, with a simple Internet command. Yes it sounds simple, and it is even more simple to setup!

What I needed it for is... At work I use a cgi proxy server based on my home pc to go around the company firewall. I also like to grab files and such at random times. BUT given the high price of energy these days, I have been turning off my PC.
With the Wake on Lan option I can send a simple "Magic Packet" to my computer, and make it turn on... from anywhere on the net! I am then able to use the Cgi Proxy or Logmein.com to control the pc! Then use the hibernate or standby feature to turn the pc off...

To set this up, all you need to do is go into bios and enable Wake on Lan. Some older pc's will need a 3 plug cord to hot wire the Ethernet card, but newer Pc's are ok. Forward port 9 to the pc you want to receive the packet. Then when ever your pc is off, you can turn it on with the current mac address (which doesn't change) of the booting Pc, and the PUBLIC ip of the connection the booting pc is using. You can use the wake on lan Packet sender from here http://www.dslreports.com/wakeup

I have tested this and it is amazingly fast!

So you can turn your comp on, say, before you get to work? that sounds like fun. I would love to freak out some ppl with that, too.
