Want 8800 grpahics card PICE 1.0

Hi

I recently purchased an 8800 GT graphics card from BFG. It was PCIE 2.0 which I was told was backwards compatible with older motherboards running 1.0. I installed the graphics card and when I turned my computer on there was nothing on the screen. The fan on the graphics card was spinning but nothing else happened. At first I thought the graphics card was broken but I tested it on another computer and it worked fine.

I preceded to google my problem and I found that it was my motherboard at fault. There are known issues with my motherboard and PCIE 2.0 graphics cards. I am after an 8800 graphics card that is perhaps an older model and it will need to be 1.0.

Unfortunately a new motherboard is not an option as it is not within my budget and I would not feel confident enough to fit it myself. Any suggestions for an 8800 with a PCIE 1.0 will be very much appreciated.

Here are my specs

Mainboard : Asus P5VD2-VM
Chipset : VIA P4M900
Processor : Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 @ 2400 MHz
Physical Memory : 2048 MB (2 x 1024 DDR2-SDRAM )
Video Card : Nvidia Corp GeForce 7300 GS
Hard Disk : ST3500630AS (500 GB)
DVD-Rom Drive : SONY DVD RW AW-G170A ATA Device
DVD-Rom Drive : UR3286D FBL641J SCSI CdRom Device
Monitor Type : TS902W - 19 inches
Network Card : Realtek Semiconductor RTL8169/8110 Family Gigabit Ethernet NIC
Operating System : Windows Vista (TM) Home Premium Home Edition 6.00.6000
DirectX : Version 10.00

My power supply was recently upgraded to a 500w so a power hungry graphics card should not be a problem. I am willing to spend about £130 which is about $253 US Dollars. Any external links for me to purchases the card from will be very much appreciated bearing in mind I live in the UK.

Thanks in advance and any help will be very much appreciated. I will do my best to help you guys out but as you can tell hardware is not my strong point. I will try and help with the software side of things :p.

THANKYOU!!

it would be much better for you to buy a new motherboard. the 8800gt is a great card.. and a decent motherboard is only 50 pounds

you could pay someone or a local store to install the new motherboard for you. it would end up being much cheaper.

also i dont understand the problem exactly... can you link me to one of the articles that talk about the problem?

I cant find the link to the problem but basicly some 2.0 cards are not backwards compatible with older motherboards so the motherboard does not recognise it. I may be willing to buy and fit a motherboard but would this mean formatting my harddrive? and i am worried that something may go wrong.

If anyone can suggest an 1.0 grpahics card i would be over the moon. A new motherboard is very much a very very last resort as i am not particually loaded.

i think the 8800 gtx and ultra are 1.0 cards.

but this will cost much more then a new motherboard.

Like Kuz said, it would be cheaper to buy a new motherboard, and the 8800GT is better than any card that would be PCI-e 1.0

But it's really up to you.

Here's the best PCI-e 1.0 card that is within your budget;

However, the 8800GT is still better. Hope this helps.

Thanks guys but i have gotten a refundon my grpahics card. To buy a new motherboar and to have it installed i am looking at spending over £100. Plus the card which will come to around £230 in total.

So a £130 graphics car that isnt as good is best for me.

Ok sure, Well... That card I linked to will be your best option. ;)

Since your board has a VIA chipset PCIe 1.0 slot it freaked out with a 2.0 card. Your orginal card could have worked if someone had told you that Asus supplies a bios update to make it compatible. You could have just updated the bios to at least ver. 0702 and the card would have worked. People need to look into things before telling you it doesnt work.

Going by that, I'd say the OP should re-buy the 8800GT and do the BIOS update.

Yea it sounds like he returned that card before he came here for info.. About all the PCIe 1.0 boards have a bios update for the problem now. It centered around VIA chipsets. Believe ASrock found the problem first and everybody else followed with updates. VIA boards are lower end and they spend the least amount of money on them so they tend to have more compatibilty problems. I still have one of the first AM2 boards from Gigabyte with a old nForce 4 chipset and it even has a PCIe 1.1a slot.

Thanks every1 for your help. I will consider flashing my motherboard and updateing the bios but i would pay someone else to do it. Would this mean i would have to reformat my hard drive?

i dont think you would have to.. but wait for someone to reply who knows what they are talking about :)
