Hey, I would like to build a new gaming computer for around $1000 and my knowledge in computers is limited. Can you guys tell me if what i have is good or just tell me what you would get for around $1000?

This is what i came up with:
Proccessor: AMD AMD Athlon 64 3000+ (1.8GHz), Socket 939, 512K, Retail Box Processor

Mother Board: Gigabyte Gigabyte GA-K8NF-9, AMD64/FX, Socket 939, nForce4 Chipset, PCI-E, Dual DDR400, SATA RAID, 8Ch Audio, Gigabit LAN, FireWall, +Norton Internet Security Retail box Motherboard

Memory: Major DDR2 1gb (2 x 512 mb ) PC4200 533 MHZ

Hard Drive: IBM IBM Hitachi 120GB 7200RPM, ATA 100 Hard Disk Drive

DVD-RW: NEC NEC ND-3520A 16X16 DVD+RW/-RW DVD beige dual layer Recordable Drive

Video Card: eVGA eVGA GeForce 7800GTX 256Mb, HDTV/2xDVI PCI-Express Video Card

Case: Thermaltake Thermaltake Tsunami VA300SWA ATX Silver Aluminum Chassis w/400Watt Computer Case

Is there anything on that list that i don't need or is stupid to get? Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

i would get a better processer like a 3200+ or 3500+ and for the videocard you can get a 6800 GT

3200+ would be better but other than that it looks good. I dont think the 7800 will bottleneck so I think your fine with that.

as thingo said the ram wont work so i think you should instead upgrade the processor as a priority. and then the graphics card. but otherwise for gamng this should be fine. id also work on getting a nice big fan for the case. so you can OC.

Proccessor: AMD AMD Athlon 64 3000+ (1.8GHz), Socket 939, 512K, Retail Box Processor
Which core is this? Ideally it would be venice (ADA3000DAA4BP) followed by Winchester (ADA3000DIK4BI) then lastly, the newcastle (ADA3000DEP4AW)

the powersupply in that case isnt that great.. have a look at PSU 101

AMD Athlon64 x2 3800+ [ada3800daa5bv, 375usd]
MSI K8n neo4 platinum [130Usd]
PNY 6800GT [300Usd]
Maxtor Diamondmax10 250gb [16mb, 100Usd]
Patriot signiture series 2X512 [cl2.5, 80Usd]
xClio 450w [12v@32a, 50Usd]
nec 3540a [40Usd]
Subtotal = 1075usd

Thanks the information looks great. One option i have is to build the computer myself and my other option is to have a company like http://www.milegroup.com/Store/config.asp build it for me. The thing i like about having another party build it for me is that i know it will be built properly and come with a warrenty. Should i try to build it myself or does anyone know of an outfit that will build it to my specs?

Is the 6800GT better than the 7800GTX then, or just as good but cheaper?
1. The 7800GTX is handsdown superior to the 6800GT
2. The box I specified will generally outpace yours left right and center regardless

Short of small computer stores, i dont know.

Its just cheaper. You can get a 7800 GT for $50 more.
? The 7800GT is vastly superior to the 6800GT regardless

the 7800GTX is about 70% faster as a 6800GT. however.. in games you wont notice a difference yet, because a 6800GT runns everything on high pretty well atm.

It looks fairly similar to the one I'm getting, except I'm getting a Athlon 64 X2 4200+, an Nvidia Geforce 7800GTX and an extra Gig of RAM. Same case, though.

ONE 7800GTX is the same performance as 2x 6800 GTs in SLI! It's one powerful card. If budget allows, this is a great card for long-term thinking. Imagine 2 of them in SLI!

yes.. and you wont see a difference between 2 6800GT's in SLI and 2 7800GTX's in SLI. except in price :D
however,.. the 7800GTX will last longer.. but with the monney you sav now, you can upgrade earlyer to a ard much more powerfull as the 7800GTX :)

I would have gone with the 250GB model to take advantage of the extra 8MB of cache but other than that its pretty good
