Want to build my own system

I am interested in building my own system, have not done so in the past but it doesn't seem to hard. I would like some advice on the best parts to use. I'm not looking to spend a whole lot right now($400 or so) and just want the necessary parts (CD-RW, DVD, etc will be added in the future). So if anyone has any opinions on CPU's (I think I'll go for an AMD, maybe 2.0Ghz), motherboards, cases, hard drives, and memory I would surely appreciate it.
Thanks

Your cheapest/best bet with a lower end AMD system is probably...

Abit Nf7-S V2.0/ DFI "NFII ULTRA INFINITY" nForce2 Ultra 400
AMD Mobile-XP 2400+/2500+/2600+
Mushkin/OCZ/Ultra PC3200 (Any brand you can afford that is reputable, don't just go for the most expensive stuff)
WD/Maxtor 60-80GB 7200RPM+ 8MB Buffer Harddrive (i dont think brand REALLY matters...)
Decent ATX case with lots of room and plenty of fan bays...again brand is prefrence.

Abit Nf7-S V2.0/ DFI "NFII ULTRA INFINITY" nForce2 Ultra 400
The A7N8X-E Deluxe board is $30 cheaper.

AMD Mobile-XP 2400+/2500+/2600+
1. Mobile is an unneccesary (and overrrated) expense
2. XP2400 is TbredB

I dont think brand REALLY matters
It doesnt

If budget is a concern, grab a Sempron 2400+, ASUS A7V8-X, 512MB Samsung, 80GB Maxtor 8MB, run of the mill case + psu .......... 85+65+90+75+36 ... whatever that adds too (and thats CAD)

i thought that board had BIOS problems..so i didnt suggest the AN7. if it doesnt than its a decent board...just under the nf7-s.

and i didnt suggest that chip cuz it gets pretty hot and you wont want stock cooling unless u like 55C-60C idle. buying a better cooler would run you pretty close to the price of a mobile i thought. and you'd still be stuck with a L2 256kb cache chip. i thought the barton would be the better choice?

... You also forgot to note that because it's a tbred it only has 256k l2.

it is. Xp2400 isn't a barton tho.

1. The a7n8x-e deluxe is plenty fine
2. I didnt reccomend the AN7
3. For the intended purpose, the A7N8X, A7N8X-E and NF2-S are all overkill. Getting a cheap but working A7N8X-X (which is easily half the cost of the NF2-S) is more than sufficient :)

Thanks for the info

All I'm really going to want to do with this system is surf the web, use it to download pics from my digital camera, and other pretty basic functions. I will probably end up playing something like half-life on it, this system should be good enough for that and I will be able to easily upgrade it in a year or so right?
Thanks for the replies

1. AthlonXPs are outdated now. Get a P4C/Athlon64-754 if you want to have it last more than a year

2. IMO you're probably best off getting the most function for the least cost now and saving up for that upgrade :) ... this would mean A7V8X-X for damn near nothign :)
