Want to Switch HDD for SSD

I have a 2tb HDD as my second drive in my system, the drive is my D: drive and want to switch it out for an SSD. I tried to do that by copying and pasting files from the HDD to the SSD and I assumed Windows would just let me remove the letter D from the HDD and assign it to the SSD which it wouldnt let me do. I then deleted everything off of the SSD and tried to reformat to start from scratch but Windows made it a Pagefile drive and now I cant format it.

So I have a couple of questions:

Does the drive NEED to be reformatted again? I did format it before attempting the copy/paste initially

What is the right way to make the SSD my D: drive? I want Steam and all the other programs to be able to work without having to give them another path to a different letter drive. Maybe I have to clone the D: drive?

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

2 ways to do this.

1. In order to assign the SSD drive to letter D, you have to assign a different letter to the 2tb drive first, like letter E providing that drive letter already isn't in use. Then you can assign the SSD to letter D.

2. You need to clone whatever is on drive D to the new SSD, then remove the 2tb drive. You can then assign the SSD drive D or it may auto assign it after removing the other drive.

Thanks for getting back to me. I had trouble before when trying to name the SSD as the D drive, windows was giving me an error message. I downloaded a cloning tool and was able to rename the SSD through that without an error message. After I cloned the drive everything is working 100% like it should. Again, I appreciate the help :)
