I want to install a larger HD,I have an 80gig hd right now and I would like to upgrade to say a 200gig, my question is if I buy a new hard drive can I just replace my old one with the new one and then install my system restore disk that came with my computer? Will that format the drive and install windows and everything or do I need to do something to the HD first? I will of coarse backup all my data first so after install I can just put it back!

I dont think the system restore works in that way. i would recomend Borrowing a windows copy from a friends, and using your current cd key. Thats if you want to re install. IF you dont want to, just use another hd. You can have a slave hard drive on your computer aswell as the Master.

My computer crashed before and I messed up some files and had to reload windows with the recovery disk and it asked me if I want to do a reformat and full system restore but all data would be lost, so could I just do that with the brand new hard drive? The disk reformats it and installs windows!

PS: What would I have to do to set up a second HD as a slave? Is there a special cable I can buy or something and whats the biggest HD windows XP will recongnize? Someone told me windows will not see anything more than something like 250gigs is this true?

All you have to do is open the case and plop in another hd. It connects with a lond "ribbon" and a little plastic connector for the power. You have to look at the jumper settings and make sure it says SLAVE (easy to do).. And then turn the computer on and partition then format it... The largest size used to be 120gb for win.. It is now like 400gb So dont be worried about size. The cable is already in your pc BTW.

ya

the 250gb thing is true with older pc's but most can, if not all with a bios update, even if it cant it will use as much as it can see, i cant remember the magic number but it is like 230 i think. so the hdd will use 230gb. :o
