Wanted: CPU ratings chart

I'm looking for a way to compare CPUs. I'm in the market to buy a new computer and want to know where a particular CPU falls in comparison to another. Like if I'm looking at 2-3 different computers how can you tell which one gives better performance based on the CPU? I guess what I'm looking for is a history maybe from the old 486s to whatever is much better and everything in between. I hope this makes sense. Just want to make a good decision on purchase, get the most for my money. Is there a chart out there that list things from ok to excellent? Thanks
