wanted to make a server...better to use server software, or use vista as server?

in school, have extra pc. wanted to make home server for all info from my work pc, home notebook, and school laptop.

didnt know if it would be better to run server 2003/2008, or set up machine to that has vista freshly installed to act like server?

new to all this, any info appreciated, thanks, appreciate the time and suggestions...

A backup storage server can just be a Vista machine
But most users just purchase a Terabyte external USB Hard Drive for this ;)

quess if i want a full service server, i'll need the server software? otherwise, its a vista machine?

thanks for the time,

No
The Bios update is totally seperate to the OS installed
How did you go with the HP auto-detection?

Edit:

Woops wrong thread :o

You can use vista just fine. If you want to make a web server or file server, vista will work just fine. Look up APACHE.

what exactly are you trying to accomplish? File sharing?

well, build a network.

used a dell dimension e521 with amd athelon 64x2, 2046 mb ram, 1.5 tb hdd, and installed server 2003.

now, need to update, install drivers and get running.

from there, get the server running, and see what i can do with it, for educational purposes....net+ and cisco....

thanks

any suggestions? buy book on active directories? not sure how to find info on that.....

anything else you would suggest?

thanks

Man to be honest, you can just google people's tech blogs, pick up a MCSE book, and so forth.

AD is not that hard once you get the basics down and actually use it. Reading it from a book is one thing, but actually touching it hands on is something else. I kind of gave up on the Cisco stuff as I find it more cut and dry and boring (personal preference) and am all about client management and directory services where it allows more creative (in my opinion) deductive logic problem solving and solution making.

Just find your niche and roll with it and the more you know makes you better.

how you find tech blogs? google "tech blogs"?

im in cisco now, icnd1+2,

getting ready to test for A+ and Net+,

and moving into MCSA/MCSE after cisco's done.

thanks, appreciate the time.

Just pick out something, like Active Directory, ISA server, importing user accounts into AD, SMS, WDS, and so on. I would do it by the service you want to read up on.

MS also publishes white pages about their products in the MSDN site, and probably in the support pages as well.
