Wanting to become educated on computer repair..

Hello friends! As I have just registered to this site, I feel as if I should first introduce myself before I start spewing questions. My name is Elijah Lutzke I am 18 years of age. Recently browsing through Facebook, I found a local ad for an acquaintance that had started a computer repair business that he runs from his home. Seeing this, I became instantly intrigued, as this is something I have always wanted to do; computer repair/networking/engineering. My only question is; where should I start learning about computer repair, and can anyone point me in the right direction? I understand that I have a lot to learn before I can start taking computers, and trying to rid them of the virus'. Thank you ahead of time for all of your help, and I hope to hear from you soon!

It depends what kind of thing this job is going to involve. You could start by reading some of user-submitted tech guides here: http://www.computerforum.com/232677-computer-forum-how-guides.html there is stuff in there about diagnosing PCs that won't boot and how-to guides on building computers (useful to read because you might be disassembling a lot of them!) as well as other software relating things.

The best way to learn is to get experience and have real problems that you need to fix, which this job should teach you. I think you'll be learning on the job if you haven't had any experience besides researching some things on the internet.

As for virus/malware related recovery, you can see our sticky on that: http://www.computerforum.com/224967-please-read-before-requesting-malware-removal-help.html as well as: http://www.computerforum.com/166728-list-security-programs-use.html

Good luck with the job! :good:

If you have the money, you could take a course named A+ in-depth. It is a 4-5 month course for about $1000 and there you will learn the basics of computer maintenance and repair. If you want to get a job fixing computers, that is basically the minimum education you will need. A lot of places might hire you without that education, but will require that you take it within a few months of working there.
