Wanting to Build Gaming PC - AMD or Intel?

Hi all..

Please bear with me as I am new here... Hi :)

Anyways.. I've got about $1k-1100 for a gaming system that I'd like to build. I'm not sure if I want to go with AMD or Intel... I was told for gaming on an Intel chipset to go with an I-5 or I-7 and either an ASUS or Gigabyte board. I've been a fan of AMD since forever now... However, again, i'm not sure if I want to go AMD or Intel. I know AMD is cheaper.. and used to be a better chip than Intel awhile back. I'm not sure which is a good gaming chipset now a days for AMD.

Now, I've built 2 systems of my own, but they were just for every day use.. and this was about 10-12 yrs ago. So I've been out of the computer component loop for awhile and things have changed considerably since. So my system has to be able to run games such as Dead Space 3 and Sim City.

Soo if you smart guys can enlighten me and point me in the right direction, I'd appreciate it!! :) Thanks!!

Lisa

I would go Intel at that budget, and A Gigabyte board for any budget, though Haswell is coming out by next month. I seriously reccomend you wait. Good components excluding board and CPU would be these:
Corsair 2 x 8 GB 1600 MHz
MSI HD 7870
Corsair 300D
Seagate Barracuda 1 TB
Corsair CX600M

The AMD CPUs are great if you want to save money. On your budget you could probably get say an FX-6300 or an FX-8320 and pair it with a great graphics card too (Radeon HD 7870 or GTX 660 Ti probably - or maybe a 7950 or a 670) and have a pretty sweet rig.

But the Intel CPUs do tend to perform a little better, but they are more expensive. I think I'm going to recommend you go with the i5 3570K.

Both won't play games very well because of the GPU, and the case and psu are crap on the AMD build. I still stand by my build, better than both of those.

I'm an Intel fanboy but if you are strictly gaming, I'd go with AMD and go nuts with graphics card and psu. Wouldn't cheap out on a MOBO either.

To the two links I clicked :

First: I would ditch the CD Blue-Ray (unless this is something that you absolutely need), go for 1600mHZ for RAM (with 16GB 1600 is plenty, can always upgrade later if you need), upgrade the video card seeing as you are under the budget of $1100 (I would anyway lol). There's no Windows, so I am assuming that you are using a version you already have.

Second: Why the added speaker set and no monitor? (I don't really have anything else to say about this one lol.

You added a wifi adapter for both, definitely needed huh?

Well the computer I plan on using is going to be an ocassional gaming system. I'm mostly going to play SimCity on it...I can't play that on my current system..the computer sucks...As for the BluRay drive...well its close to the same price as a regular cdrom drive so why not. speakers I just threw those in justbbecsuse...already havr win 7 ultimate disc. Have an older lcd monitor too. Wifi Is a must have ad the router and modem are in the living room and this computer is in the bedroom
. Don't want an ethernet cord running thruout the place...

I'd rather my budget be lower than $1000 if possible but for a decent machine I may end up building one around $1000. So I'm kinda looking for a more budget gaming system..

Anymore suggestions would be great....thanks :)

Go with PCUnicron's build and add an AMD CPU and board to it and see how much it costs, then do the same for Intel.

CPUs I'd recommend for AMD would be the FX-6300 or the FX-8320. On your budget I'd go 8320. Boards I'd recommend for AMD would be the Gigabyte GA-990FX UD3 or UD5.

If you want to go Intel I'd recommend an i5 3570K and a Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UD3H or UD5H.

Here is my AMD build. Anything you would change? Its a bit cheaper than Intel's.

What do you think of the Graphics card?

Drop the sound card and use the good one that's built in on the motherboard.

The 990 is prettier but this motherboard will perform just as well for gaming/general use and bit easier on the budget.

.4GHz more for $10 less than 6300. Don't need x8.

7870

I'd go with Seasonic or Corsair. 850w is overkill. Better built PSU for a tad more.

2x4 GB is enough and like motherboard, allows money elsewhere in the build. This 1866 has nice timings.

This hdd unless you want to spend the other 15-20 for FAEX and it's 5 yr warranty. BTW, Outlet PC has shipping fees.

Save the $41 and just get a burner.

Nice monitor. $40 more than the one you picked, but you get $30 of it back.

After CPU instant promo: $882 shipped
Now get a better case and a wifi card.
Use the $45 in rebates and gift card for an aftermarket cooler.

Hello... Thanks so much for everyones replies..

So I basically went to cyberpowerpc.com and built my computer from them. It was cheaper than getting the parts together myself. I paid, including shipping, $990. I didn't get a monitor in with the price, but that's fine. I'll either use the one I have or I'll get another one in a couple weeks. It's also a liquid cooler system. I didn't bother upgrading certain things because I can do that at a later time..

On the system I got, I upgraded the motherboard, RAM and video card. Here is my new system:

CASE: Cooler Master Elite 431 Mid-Tower Gaming Case w/ Side-Panel Window
CD:24X Double Layer Dual Format DVD+-R/+-RW + CD-R/RW Drive (BLACK COLOR)

Almost positive you can buy the parts from newegg for less. And if you go to the next page you have to add windows in too for another 100
