Wanting to get into 3d.

Well Ive been intrested in 3d graphics for a while now and I decided that I wanna learn how to do 3d graphics.

Now I wanna have a seperate pc for that only.

Il be using either 3d studio max or Maya or both and most likely a couple other programs that are free.

So im not sure if I should get a laptop or desktop for these to run on. What would be better to have?

Im not sure on how much id spend on the pc yet so if you can just show me what you think.

Thanks.

ANy reccemendations for a desktop or desktop build that would be perfect to run it all ?

Honestly, I would recommend you just play around with those programs first. It's a fairly steep learning curve, and could take you a little while to get used to them (3D studio max anyway). I think you should concentrate on learning/playing with the programs first, then if you love it, go and spend some money on a PC that will be able to render faster.

Yeah but see, Ive been wanting to do this for years and I might go take clases for this and the money isn't an issue.

I don't wanna do any of it on my main pc because it's strictly for gaming and media center, burning and all that stuff.

Ive messed around already with these programs already and now I wanna learn them.

A good buddy and fellow UT clan member has put some links together for designing games. He is a game/level designer for Gearbox software, so I think he knows what he is talking about. He is also completely self taught.

Check out his Sticky's for tips.

Go with a desk top! Laptops are just bad for doing 3D compiling.

Your computer isn't that bad, try 3d with it

check out Kerkythea :)

Uh ok ?

Ya see I do not want to do it on this pc, don't want it on this pc I want a seperate pc for it.

And yeah my current pc is horrible, my system sucks I gotta up it.

are there any other programs that you would like other that 3d studio max or Maya???

Like Sketchup, AutoCAD, Inventor, Solidworks, Kerkythea(I keep pushing it because I like it so much)

Some 3D aps are more for engineering or gaming If your into the look of 3D and like art or animation try Softimage XSI. Its come down alot in price once it was 20k now it can be had for £300 with just the physics and hair addons missing and it's a very full featured high end app that requires no plugins unless you want real fast DOF and easier to do fluids. It comes with the latest mental ray rendering. Industrial Light and Magic use Softimage XSI its a 3D app specificaly designed to do animation, special effects, and photo real rendering. It's fast becoming the app to use for making games. Halflife 2 was created on Softimage XSI.

Most important hardware needed in 3D aps is the processor and the Ram. The only thing that runs on the graphics card is the GUI thats used to model and animate and that only uses plain shaded open GL graphics with no effects no ray tracing. Final 3D rendering and preview rendering only uses the CPU and Ram to render.

I would try the demo of each app and see which you like the most then if it runs fine on your comp buy another computer only for rendering while you work on your next job or game as rendering for print outs for A3 size can take 8hrs- a few days using dual 2Ghz processors 2GB ram rendering with mental Ray. my rendering Comp has an old 64MB graphics card it does no rendering despite what alot believe. Doing 3D and rendering with one computer means when you do a final render your sat about with no computer to use for a long time. Yu can get around this by only rendering while your asleep and at work.

Are you in your High school's engineering program? I plan to take all 5 classes, and we basically get to fool around on AutoCAD and Inventor for 90min a day :)
