Wanting to upgrade to a new laptop

My Acer Aspire 5570z is practically dead. The battery doesn't hold a charge, whenever it's plugged in it says that it isn't charging, and I'm running out of memory on it. I can't even find too many parts for the laptop.
I love my laptop dearly, even though everyone says Acer's are terrible. But I think I need to face the facts and admit that I need a new laptop. I've had the Acer since September of 2007 and have used it almost daily since then, some days more often than others.
So since I need a new laptop sometime, I was wondering what types of laptops people recommend. My dad has had so many problems with his desktop HP but I'm not sure if the laptops are different. I've heard so many wonderful things about Mac's but I'm just not sure that I can trade over. I've been a PC girl my whole life.
If anyone could help, that would be wonderful!
 
What is your use of laptop?
Budget?

BTW, if you remove the battery and plug it on mains, is the laptop still running?
 
My laptop is used for everything from recreation on the internet, games, Word for school work and research.
My budget would be pretty low, since I'm still a HS student.
If I remove the battery and leave it plugged in, it'll stay alive but it won't charge at all.
 
Acer? a bad brand? lol acer is an amazing brand. Mine has worked perfectly, fast andlike 20.7 for 3 years now. Look into getting another acer
