WAV. To MP3

Is there any free software that will allow me to to convert WAV to MP3? I have some Wave files in my PC and I would like to convert them to MP3 so my MP3 player can play them.

I tried that and everytime I try to load it I get error messages, so now I'm in the hunt for something else.

On a side note what is better quality wise WAV or MP3...........is their a difference?

mp3 is known for its small file size but if you had a 3mb mp3 which u converted to wav (wave) it will probably be around 35-40MB and in my own opinion wav sounds are better, but i maybe wrong !!

Wave is better quality. mp3s are lossy compressed. It's like jpeg vs bmp. jpegs are a lot smaller but you lose some quality.

Try lame, it's free.

The reason why i asked about quality is because I want to put my MEtallica, Beatles, Zepplin and Pink Floyd collection onto my MP3 player, but most of the cd's come out to be anywhere from 700mb to alitte over a Gig as Wave and I cant fit them all on my player....not to metnion my player for some reason does not like wav files. So I was looking for a way to shrink them down but keep great quality.

For most poeple 128kbps mp3 is high enough quality, some poeple insist on using a higher bit rate like 320kbps though. It's not as good quality as wave but it's so much smaller and the difference isn't very noticable. You'll hear it if you are really trying to but for just listening you'll probably not hear any difference.
