Ways of Testing Routers

Hey guys. Just want to quickly ask if it's possible to test a router to see if it works without having to disconnect my current router and temporarily replace it with the one I'm testing? I was a given a router, but the guy said that he doesn't know if it works or not.

I just want to see if it'll emit a wireless signal and that all the ports work.

Not without hooking it up you can't. The only thing you can do without it hooked up is making sure it emits a wireless signal. You can connect to the router, you just can't surf.

That works for me. I just want to know that it will emit a wireless signal. I'm going to assume that all the ports work.

The guy who gave it to me said that he bought it brand new and he had Best Buy set it up for him (mistake). They told him that the router wasn't working and that he'd have to get a new one. So it's essentially a brand new router, but apparently it doesn't work according to Best Buy....
