I just want to use the subject card for it's IDE ports. I recently upgraded to a Dell Dimension E520 and need to have the card to use my DVD R/W drive. The RAID drivers for the card don't work with VISTA, but I heard there's a way to utilize the card for the IDE ports only. Any help is greatly appreciated!!!!!

You can't use a RAID card for optical drives, as far as I know. You're limited to the two IDE channels(2 devices each) on your motherboard (or 1 channel @ 2 devices if your motherboard only has 1)

SATA on motherboard only

I forgot to mention that important piece of info... I needed the PCI card because my motherboard only has SATA, and my DVD R/W drive is IDE.

Uhh. I'm pretty sure every motherboard available has IDE ports. What kind of motherboard do you have?

And if you DO only have SATA ports, you'll need an IDE card(just provides extra IDE ports), not a RAID card.

If your mobo is S-ATA chances are it could... well... actually... it wouldn't or couldn't have a RAID controller on it.

If you want a RAID controller - and your mobo doesn't have one, you have to add one. If you bought the mobo with one on it, naturally in all or most cases the mobo has at least one IDE and FD on it.

The manufacture should know you need an IDE to attach a CD/DVD drive to it to install an OS. It could do without a FD - but we're not talking about FD are we?

You asked about adding a RAID? Not adding an IDE adapter.

Check the manufacture of the mobo. Let's take a look at what you have in order to assist you.

Dell Dimension E520

The subject computer specs are available at http://www.dell.com/content/product...imen_e520?c=us&cs=04&l=en&s=bsd&~tab=specstab
The board didn't come with IDE ports. I bought the PCI RAID card because it had two IDE ports... I just didn't figure on the driver not working with VISTA. On a couple other sites I read about configuring the card to atleast work as an IDE add-on card and to disable the RAID function. I've written the company, but haven't heard back from them. I was hoping that this forum could shed some light on the subject. And to reiterate, I am positive that the mobo does not have IDE ports.

Wow, that's really shitty. Dell un-ingenuity for you. Shame on Dell. That's a horrible idea. (Not having IDE). Stupid Dell proprietary crap.
