WD Elements Desktop TV/Backup question

I've been using a WD Elements desktop external HDD with my PVR to record TV. I now need to use that drive to do a full backup. My computer does not see the drive however if I go in the taskbar I can safely remove it.

Is the HDD in a format that Windows cannot handle?

After I am done with my back do I have to reformat the drive for it to work with my PVR?
 
Have you tried hooking up the external hard drive to your machine with the Macintosh operating system? Perhaps it will be able to read the file system on the external hard drive.
