OK, I am helping my wife with her laptops (she just got another one) and she has an external drive. We just want to format it, and get rid of everything on the drive to start fresh and move her important things. how can I do that...

I dont have the option to format it. Also we dont care if what is on there is password protected... we just want it formatted.
 
Use disk management to delete partitions and reformat it however you want. The software preinstalled on it may be protected to where you can't delete it.
