I wanted to host a Chatroom....Is it better to purchase a domain like for 5 bucks a month or do a free one like bravehost? whats the difference between most free domains and paid ones? and can you reccommend a site for hosting my website? there are literally hundreds...whats the best/easiest/fastest

Basically when you pay, you get your own domain and there will be no ads on your site. When it's free, it's the opposite. I personally like Bravehost cause I currently use it.

Yea I have bravehost as well...so can you just purchase a domain name and not get their monthly package? u know i dont midn ads and stuff

Your subject says "Web Hosting" but in your post you are talking about purchasing a domain name.

You can purchase a domain name from anyone.
Free domain names tend to have the companies name in it e.g. lostchat.bravehost.com, if you PURCHASE one then you could have for example www.lostchat.com

Then you need webspace to host the chatroom which you can either get from the same company you buy the domain name from (if they offer that service) or buy from another company and point the domain name at your web host.

I bought my domain name from Yahoo Small Business and my host is AFMU.com

ok ..i already have that site set up http://lostchat.bravehost.com/ if i purchase a domain name...say www.lostchat.net or something...will i have to redo the whole site or can i just take my site to the new name or will my sit ebe renamed or how does that work

I think you can transfer it over somehow. You don't have to start over.

Looking at the bravenet site they also sell domain names. To keep it simple I'd suggest you buy one from them and then ask them to set it up for you. As you already have webspace with them there shouldn't be any issue.

Never ever buy a domain name from the place you are hosting at. If you decide to move to a different host, it can be a pain in the a$$ to get them to change the DNS info.

Use GoDaddy.com to purchase domain names. They are very cheap, and you have complete control over your domain. DNS changes that I have done there lately (to change from one server to another) have been propagating within an hour. That's very fast.
