hi guys and gals,

i consider myself a creative enough of a guy and able enough to learn new software mostly on my own (im proficient enough photoshop which was self taught and most of my maya proficiency is from self teaching), but i was wanting to delve into website building to build up myself as more of an asset to my employer as someone who would be able to maintain or alter our website (adding/subtracting resumes, photos, etc.). i want to buy a DIY book on website building so i could see how much would be able to do on my own before spending un-needed money on classes and such. my question is are there any books someone can recommend for essentially beginners on website construction? thanks guys

@artistream: Why don't you choose Joomla www.joomla.org? It's is an open source portal. It's easy to use and maintain. You can also change, edit or apply theme without knowing much about web design. I've built my blog with Joomla. Take a look if you want to see an example.

I have made a few websites for companies using Adobe GoLive. I know nothing about html code, css, php, mysql, flash and all that stuff, actually i have no idea what they mean even. But that program i have found to be the easiest for my to use. I self taught myself on it and used a little google help when stuck.

Probably isnt what you are looking for but i put it here for you out of interest for you to have a look into it.

ill def check those out. i just want to know enough to be a greater asset to my employer (small/mid sized engineering firm) as i know my boss would love it if i could manage our website.

adobe dreamweaver is a good program for building websites and there are several books specific to it. are you interested in coding or using templates? if you just want to get a feel for some basic html or css you should check out http://www.webmonkey.com/. it still might be better to take one class eventually to learn correct style.
