when i boot my laptop
compaq presario C300
a continous beeping noise comes out of the speakers
this only happens when its says
"starting up windows"
and to stop it i run my fingers along all the function keys
why does it do thiss haha help
it has windows xp
1gb of ram

Could you describe the beeping sound a bit more, or perhaps record it somehow and post it? My first thought would be some hardware issue such as temperature, but if it stops when you touch the function keys, that's pretty much eliminated...

Do the function keys make little beeps when you tap them? Perhaps there's some kind of issue with them?

i upgraded it to windows 7 and the beeping on startup has stopped? so it must have been somthing to with windows xp haha thanks for your help all the same

usually beeping on start up is part of the POST which checks hardware.

Seems strange that a change in OS cured it. Haha oh well.

mmm well looks i was kidding haha
still happens with windows 7 just didn't that one time
the beeping is like a series of continouse really quick beeps. haha really loud aswell then it stops and it says resuming windows.
it started happening when i left my computer to hibonate for agesss without using it then i booted it up again and it beeped haha now when ever i take it out of hibanation or boot it up it beeps at me.
i took a recording and i will attach it.
its not a very good recording so if u want another one i am happy to do so
thanks

That almost sounds like a stuck key. You probably wouldn't care to do this, but I'd suggest removing the keyboard (some laptops make this an easy process, some make it impossible :P) and use an external.

Oh...and if you see anything in the bios about "Halt on", change it to "All Errors". Many buy default may be on "All but keyboard", thus would bypass a missing keyboard or stuck key.
