Lately I ran into a similar problem here with a dvd burner trying to custom install Vista along with XP in a dual boot configuration. After pressing the any key to boot option the installer would load only so far and stall. There's nothing wrong with the drive itself.

After shutting the system entirely or repeatedly pressing the reset button all of a sudden the screen for choosing install now or repair tools finally came up. All this was proceeded with the use of a lens cleaner cd yet still saw the stalls. Recheck the data cable as well as trying a cleaner cd to see if that suddenly gets you going there.

Not really since you can easily end up seeing flaky keys on an old or cheaply made keyboard where you have to pound keys to get anywhere. :P

Cordless keyboards on the other hand can easily see problems when first trying to install Windows even with Vista. A corded model is always advised until the system is up and running to then see the software for any cordless model installed later.
