Hello everyone...

I'm having a weird problemwith my computer today. Since I turned it on thismorning there are 3 weird files on my desktop by the following names:

CAA7Q1YH.
CA5X7F37.
CAFEDSHR.

They don't have any particular format, and their file sizes are 0 bytes!!!

When I try to delete them, I get an error message telling me that "Cannot read from the source file or disk" !

I've scanned them with norton, and they are clean but it's just annoying the hell out of me...

I'd be greatful if you could advise on how to get rid of them.

Kind Regards,

Nima

The place to start to see if they are seen among the desktop icons is in the "C:\DocumentsandSettings\user name(your user name)\desktop" folder. Anything put there becomes visible on the desktop itself. You can use Windows Explorer to browse that folder and right click on them to see them removed by choosing the delete option.

If a denied access message appears right click on them and choose the properties option and uncheck the "read only" box and click apply. If they weren't placed there by any spyware or virus some software you were running may have tried to save some file to the desktop. To be on the safe side you will want to run a few different types of removers to see something did get onto the system there.

I tried that. The items are visible in the folder you mentioned, however I was not able to remove them. The read-only box was not ticked when I opened the properties so that prbably isn't the problem. But whatamazes me is their 0 byte sizes! it's like they they are there but they don't exist!!! Any other suggestions for removing them? I'm desperate.

Try it in safe mode!

The inability to delete them could be seeing a denial if some application is still using the files. Booting in safe mode or simply using the task manager to end everything but the system processes should allow you to go into the desktop folder and remove them. You could try something besides Norton like a pair of online scanners provided by Symantec for both viruses and trojans. http://security.symantec.com/sscv6/...d=22&pkj=NCGSCKMRKRFPECDMEYI&setjsax=1&bhcp=1

Aaaahhhhh...!!!

Hello guys!

I've tried everything you've asked, I ran the symantec software and nothing was found! I started the pc in the safe mode and I still couldn't delete the files!

The problem is that once it gets to deleting them, the computer does not recognise their existence!!! and therefore creates the error message: "Cannot delete the file: Cannot read from the source file or disk" But here they are on the desktop!

This is annoying the hell out of me...So PLEASE keep the solutions coming!

Much appreciated!

Regards,

Nima

Finally!

Wow!

I just found the ultimate solution! I backed up all the info on my user account and made another admin user account and deleted the previous one!

I'm saved...

Thank you for your help.

ciao

They could maybe have been on removable media eg. A memory stick and she/he couldn't delete them cause it wasnt plugged in.

Oh and if you got rid of the user account they are still on your computer but not visible on your current desktop.

If they came off of any removable media or flash drive they would have had to have been dragged onto the desktop to be seen or a desktop shortcut would have been created for each one. At present I still have a leftover folder from the RC1 beta that can't be removed even without Windows on that drive running. When right clicking to delete or trying to drag them into the recycle bin I've been seeing the same "Cannot read from the source file or disk" or the "access denied" message come up.

That was created by Vista which shows some program running either on the drive or cd left those behind when the system was shutdown probably part of an autosave process.
