Weird computer problem

Sorry to ask for help guys, I really have no idea what to do. I have a XPS 210 that was given to me. Its having problems logging in. Basically after between 5 - 30 seconds the screen cuts off, I am not sure if its the display that just stops, or whether it freezes or what, just that the screen goes off. If I am in safe mode I can go all day, no problems anywhere. Scanned for viruses and nothing, check the temps ( they are a little high ), but should be fine. Scanned the Disk for errors, as well as ram and I have nothing. I also just found out that the Guest account will let me stay logged in as well, not sure if it will do the same after reboot. Anyways, I have no idea what to do, it vista home BTW. I have also tried updating the driver, I am about to roll it back and see what that does.

Ok so I managed to change the resolution and the refresh rate, down to 800 x 600 and 60hz respectfully, and its stayed on for a good 2 minutes and counting, if this can help solve the problem at all.

i had similar problem with 7950x2 graphic card turned out to be graphic card being bad and had to change it.

once you can get in try to see if you can update the drive and also check if the graphic card is responding properly. if this works out it might not be the graphic card.

also what kind of monitor are you using with it as many monitor if overloaded will fail to display picture.

I tried rolling back and updating the driver and the only thing that will prevent it from crashing is by disabling? if I disable the displays in dev manager it stops crashing. The monitor is a standard dell flat screen, it supports all the res I have tried it at. Do you think its a bad video card, and is there anyway to test that? I guess I can drop in a video card, but I would like to avoid spending the money if its a driver issue not a hardware issue. Thanks!

Update, found out that the person who gave it to me used to have an ATI card, and he removed it when it died. i think its the system trying to use that card even though its not there, how do I remove all drivers and software that was used by the card.

Ok so I disabled Safe video, disabled sleep/hibernate and rolled back my drivers and testing it now but it seems to be fixed, thank you all for the help, as especially the above that tool will come in VERY handy in the future.
