Weird control delay in games

Sometimes when I'm playing games (HL2 has been doing this, Painkiller did it a couple times.)
When I'm say....going forward and then unpress the forward button the game hangs and I just keep going forward, the mouse doesn't respond or nothing for a few seconds, then it returns to normal for a little while then it does it again.. Has anyone else had this problem? It's really annoying...

Sounds like your computer can't keep up but it should. Has it just recently started doing that or has that been happening since the beginning?

Recently... I think I should just close some background progs before playing HL2. It seemed to help but I didn't play long enough to completely be sure it was the problem. I was wondering if this was a problem with a simple solution or just some lag because of too many programs.
