Weird Observation

I bought a new Targus Chillhub yesterday and I must say it is a lot better than my previous notebook cooler. The thing tilts at an angle so I can type on my keyboard more accurately, Provides better ventilation and disipation of heat etc, and just looks and feels like a better piece of hardware. Now I have one observation that puzzles me, and that is whenever I plug my iPod USB connector into the Chillhub the thing goes dead. However when I plug in a USB flash drive, everything works as planned. I can't plug my iPod connector directly into my laptop because whenever I go to sync my iPod, it shorts out my laptop and I have to take the battery out and reboot. Would anyone know whats causing this mysterious happening? I'm at a loss on what to do.

So your Ipod is causing problems in both the laptop and the hub? Sounds like it is the ipod... Does it work on any other computers?

You said there that the IPod shorts out your laptop whenever you plug it directly to the laptop...
So my guess here is that your IPod is doing the same thing again to your Chillhub... You might want to bring your IPod to the store and have it repaired...

Hmm... It's not just the iPod, its the USB cable that is used to connect the iPod that makes me wonder. I just plug in the USB cable into one of the hubs and it doesn't turn on, nor does my laptop recognize any of my other USB devices that I have plugged in. How might I go about having my iPod repaired?

After re-reading your first post and your latest respond, I got the impression that your cable might have some weird wiring that will short out or ground the laptop and Chillhub.
Bring your iPod to the nearest Apple store or call them up and ask them what is wrong and whether they can repair it. Is it still under warranty?

Apple is usually pretty good about their word as long as its within their 1 year warranty period. After that, things get tricky. Definitely take it in before its too late.

Are Apple stores found in say, Best Buy? And if they are, would I be able to take mine to Lexington, KY because thats the nearest one to my College. Or should I wait until I go home and take it to where I bought the iPod originally.

Nope, they are actual Apple stores, all by themselves. Try going to apple.com and looking for a store near you (its on the site somewhere).

DO NOT take it to best buy. Their geeksquad will work look at them and then anally rape you without a reac around money wise! I know, I used to work for those bastards.

You don't actually have to physically bring it to the store... if it's still under warranty, there should be an option on apple's support site to send it in by mail. They'll even send you a prepaid box to ship it in... no cost to you.

I had to do that with mine, its a really easy thing. BTW my battery went for a crap with like 3 days left on warrenty :D lol

Hmm thanks for the information regarding the store locations, I will just wait until I go home for fall break (October 20th) and take care of it then. I did some more tinkering with my cooler, laptop, and iPod and I found out that if I shut my laptop down and turn off the cooler, plug in my chord and connect my iPod, then turn on my laptop everything works as it should. I wonder why it works that way and not just plugging it in while I have my computer on?

could the problem result from too much power being pulled from the computer? that would explain alot of things. if the chill pad runs of USB power, its going to be sucking alot of power, and then the ipod will be sucking power to recharge its battery. the reason the flash drive worked is because it didnt require nearly as much power. thats my theory. i wish i knew more power consumption specifics about USB. maybe someone else can clarify.

edit: i would pull out the manual for the cooling pad to see what it says about USB devices.
