Weird speaker problem in Ubuntu 11.04 (64 bit)

Hi folks! I just installed Ubuntu for the first time. When I go to record incoming audio, I can't hear anything until I play back the recording. I've checked both record and playback settings, and see the signal cooming in on the meters.

I'm suspecting that, like Windows 7, Ubuntu 11.04 has a separate control for speaker routing, in addition to the input mixer - which I can't find if Ubuntu has one.

So I'm at a loss -can someone offer a clue?

I haven't used Ubuntu in years, so not sure if this will be 100% right, but i'll try.
There should be a program simply called sound mixer, which will give you excess to all the volume levels and such. It should be available from the start menu and was normally available from the taskbar as well by right clicking the icon.

And i dont know how much recording experience you have, but that's fairly normal. Most soundcards cant playback whats being recorded at the same time with out there being a fairly serious lag at the same time. So by default most recording programs turn it off. If you have a very good interface for recording and have the proper drivers configured, you can most likely enable it in whatever program your using.
I have a $150 interface for recording guitar and vocals, and i can't even play back as i record without some noticeable lag-enough that it will mess you up.
