Hi there, hopefully I am posting this in the right area and someone can help me with my problem. I really can't seem to figure it out.
Here goes...
I have a computer that is dedicated as a digital audio workstation (DAW). It is used for nothing else except recording music, it didn't even have anti-virus software. Anyway, I caught some virus (shocking, huh?) on it transfering some free VSTi's from my 'general' computer to it that was making the computer not recognize the CD/DVD-ROM drives and eventually corrupted the registry so that I got that lovely blue 'fatal error' screen everytime it would boot.
I was affraid I'd have to reformat, but fortunately was able to save it by using the repair option and now it recognizes my CD/DVD-ROM drives. I learned my lesson from not having any protection on it so I installed Norton to keep it clean.
Now the damned thing won't recognize my thumb drive that I use to transfer updates for my host DAW program. Windows XP Home SP1 recognizes it, it shows it in the task bar as a mass storage USB device, but won't load it as a drive (I:, etc.). Anyone know what the cause of this could be? I've had problems in the past with hard drives not being recognized as a drive, but found out that in Administration Tools I had to initialize it, but it doesn't seem to be working with this issue.
I've thought about upgrading to SP2 (don't know if that would fix my problem), but it seems that installs too much crap that runs in the background processes. That, along with Norton running (can't seem to find out how to not make it load its process' at startup, would just like it to run only when I tell it), I fear would put to much strain on my DAW's resources. But, I could be wrong, I'm not a computer expert by any means.
Anyway, sorry for the essay, but thanks in advance for the help!
