Weird wireless internet problem

So here's the situation:

I am paying for an internet connection of 7.0Mbps. When I connect my desktop directly to the cable modem, I can reach speeds of approximately 6.5Mbps, that's great!

Well, I need a router in order to get an internet connection on my laptop. But when I add the router to the system I can only reach speeds of approximately 700kbps. What's the deal?

I have tried to reset the modem and router but nothing seems to help. Does anyone have a solution or any advice.

By the way it's a netgear - g router, and a dell desktop and dell laptop, both running xp.

thanks

well, if they are using the Internet at the same time, then the speed that you can is a screen shot for a small time, you can't decide exactly the speed of your cable when connected to a router and especially when it gives you wireless connection

keep the router connected...just stop broadcasting a wireless signal and don't conncet your laptop to the router....see if you still get the same low speeds..process of elimination to find out what is bogging down your connection.
