well my sister just got a new Dell laptop and its picking up the router signal, but we dont know what the WEP key is, is there a way to find out?

thanks...

The whole point of the WEP is to prevent people from accessing your network :P Typically router's don't come with a pre-entered WEP, so you almost had to of set it at some point. if you can access the router's setup, you can probably disable it.

well i found out we dont have a wep key but its funny because on the laptop it says that its connected to home(our wireless signal) and that the signal is excellant, but when you click on the internet browser or anything internet related, it says page cannot be displayed and such.????

are your internet settings set up for a router connection?

to do this go to internet options under tools in internet explorer. then click on the connections tab and delete any connections that are in the box, then tick 'never dial a connection'

Also, make sure the LAN settings are set to detect automatically, this was a downfall for me a while ago until I fixed it.

it may have an excellent signal, but there is a limit in the connectivity, which is shown like a lock on your wireless network icon. To change this, you need the WEP code. I suggest you go to http://192.168.1.1. When you get there, just click on wep encryption, and look at your pass.

Goodluck

yea kemp, there is a little lock shown but http://192.168.1.1 doesnt work for me, it just says page cannot be displayed...?
It's one of a few possible IP addresses for the router (you might have more luck with http://192.168.0.1)

Is she using the laptop elsewhere, such as at school? If so, it may be setup to use a proxy server. Right click on Internet Explorer and select properties, then go to Connections -> LAN Settings, and make sure that the 'Use a proxy server...' option is unticked. Also ensure that 'Never dial a connection' is selected under Connections, and that you are not set to work offline. You can try pinging the router or another PC to test the connection.
