WEP Network Key for Older Computer Question

I have an older computer (ACER Travelmate C100) that is wireless and I want to connect to the internet. The wireless network requires the use of a network key (WEP). I have done some research and think I know how to change the settings on my router...WEP, WPA, WPA2.

I am currently using a D-Link router (DIR-655) for my desktop and 2 pc's without a problem. I am using the WPA Only-Personal setting and believe this provides me with good security for all users in my home.

Instead of setting the DIR-655 to WEP which I understand will slow my internet connection and increase my security risk, is there a way to connect this older wireless pc to my system?

It picks up all the surrounding protected wireless networks.......even mine, but I can't get connected because of the WEP Network Key.

I am not a computer guru by any means and have spent a few hours trying to figure this out without success. Thank you in advance for any assistance you can provide.

Go here and download the "Others" file - it has a driver for Invilink from Jan 2009 - that oughtta fix you up. Let us know.

Thanks for your help, but here's what I did (hopefully correct). LOL

I'd really hate to give up on this older computer, so I keep trying.

I downloaded the Invilink driver and used my flashdrive to transfer and install the driver into the older Travelmate C100. It installed and I rebooted my C100. I searched for available networks, found mine and it still asked for my WEP network key. When I read the notepad about the Invilink driver it stated it could be used for presentations using the cursor keys, but would disable the infrared wireless device. Kinda confused me.

I didn't give up there...........I downloaded and tried to install:

-the wireless LAN driver by Angere 7.62.0.315. I couldn't install it for some reason.
-the LAN driver by Realtek 5.502.0131.2002. That didn't work either.
-the Modem driver by Angere 3.1.113. I was not successful.

Don't know if this helps, but I noticed my IrDA Fast Infrared Port was disabled so I used troubleshoot to enable it.

My Travelmate C100 also has a 1394 Net Adapter that is connected somehow and running at 400 Mbps but is not receiving or sending data. I also have a ORiNOCO Mini PC card.

Also, my C100 is running XP Version 2002, Service Pack 1.

I am so confused right now and I'm just pushing stuff out here hoping something I've said can help me out.

Well, I don't know where it's asking you to enter the key - but

XP Service Pack 1 computers do not support WPA by default and cannot support WPA2. To upgrade an XP SP1 computer to support WPA (but not WPA2)...

So you need to hook that laptop up to your router via ethernet cable. Go to update.microsoft.com, and get that thing updated to SP3. Just keep checking for/installing updates until there aren't any more to be instaled. Then hopefully you'll be all set.
