well, for quite a while now ive been saving up to get a new comp (im going to TRY to build my own:rolleyes:)
I'm not a totaly mentaly challenged when it comes to computers, im pretty good with them and know most of the termonalogy, just havnt ever hand built one before, ive added memory to my comp and my dad's old comp, but thats about it.

but instead, im going to spend my money on a new 24 inch monitor for my dad, cause you know, im a good son like that :D
I have about $350 to spend on it, and so far, im looking at THIS Acer

He uses his computer for the following:
web browsing
watching movies (rarly)
watching videos (like youtube)
and on a rar occation, some simple gamming (we are talking MAYBE once a month, and just a game like the origional Delta Force, which is about 6-8 years old:P)

thats about it, do you think this Acer is good for these uses? or do you have a better recomendation?

Thanks in advance! :)
Mike

It will likely take a little more then $350 for a good 24" lcd since prices are still above that for the most part unless you catch a good rebate or sale. For the Acer brand the 24" widescreen seen at the link sees a 2ms response time making that one of the best. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824009125

Other brands do compete with Acer quite well. 5ms is still a good response time seen on the Viewsonic Optiquest model for a little less at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824116104

Once you browse a little for a smaller screen like a 22" you will start to see lower prices like the $319.99 for the 22" widescreen Samsung model with a 2ms response time at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824001096

The main problem however will be supporting the higher screen resolution for an older video card if that what is being used. The X300 in your sig is on the discontinued list at ATI. http://ati.amd.com/products/discontinued.html

The Acer model as well as a number of others will still run the old game there according to the highest resolution the game itself supports. For one 7yr. old Soldier of Fortune II run here the highest besides the 1280x1024 on a standard display would be 1152x862 there.

For ordering online where you can save a bundle TigerDirect is having a good sale on 22" and 24" lcds alike as seen at http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/category/category_slc.asp?CatId=2775&msg=S197-2402

this is actually my computer in the sig, but he has a newer (only about a year old) Dell XPS 410, not sure of the graphics card though, since he got it on E-Bay, we didnt get a printout showing all the info like mine came with.

Thanks for the help and for the links, it's greatly appriciated :)

I don't think the brand is upto par while being one of the higher end models helps out a lot that way. Most better PCI-E types are geared for higher resolutions to begin with.

The last build here saw a lower end Radeon model seeing Max Resolution2048 x 1536@85Hz for the MSI X1300Pro 256mb card used there. Having just replaced an old 17" lcd with a new 19" wide screen model the switch there to 1440x900 from 1280x11024 takes a little getting used to at first.

But even a 1990 8bit dos game still looks good. :P
