What am I missing???

Guys,

This is a newbie question, after a number of years of trying different ways of backing up data and having one problem after the other I finally bit the bullet at xmas and got myself a Synology DS 412 unit to put all my data on.

I have a Gigabyte EX58-UD4P with a I7 965 @ 3.20GHz with 6GB of ram running on 8.1 and dx 11.

When I connected the DS 412 to the computer and ran the disk that came with it, the computer formatted the 4 x 3tb Hdd's I wanted to use for back ups but now the 4 drives and unit are not showing up anywhere on my computer.

Any thoughts to what I am missing that may cause this hassle?????

Check Disk Management and make sure it has a drive letter assigned to it.

Thanks for your quick response voyagerfan, but sadly there is nothing showing anywhere that I have been able to find on my computer, I have tried everything I can think of (with networking that's nothing), it's probably so obvious it's staring me in the face.

What I think is interesting is that the modem it showing it as being busy!!!!!

after this point everything is unreadable.....at first I thought it was because I do not have Microsoft office on my computer but a couple of friends have had the same problem and they do have Microsoft office (thus the delay in responding)...

I do have the synology assistant on my computer and it reads as ready at the 414 unit but there is no way I can tell it to raid or even save data..... when I highlight the unit "Connect and Map Drive" become available and if I select either of them I and asked to sign in but I have unable to do so...
the next link puts at this same point......do I have to register the unit before I can use it as I keep getting knocked back with the passwords??????

I have tried posting my problem on the synology forum but to no avail.

You can reset the admin password by pressing the RESET button on the Synology product for about 4 seconds until you hear a beeping sound. This will restore IP, DNS, passwords for the "admin" account to default value, and reset the “guest” account to “disabled” status. The default password of the “admin” account is blank.

The file you had trouble reading is the DSM file - a kind of operating system for the synology and not meant for reading. It needs to be used to update the synology device once in the admin user area.
