What are the KEY things that you need for a correct RAM match?

Hi Folks:P

I just got the wrong RAM 3 times in a row. I am really having a tough time at this!!!!!!!:rolleyes:

I am an expert at computers, but only beginner-intermediate at the hardware end of things:confused:

Next time when I go to get RAM for the 4th time, I need to know what the KEY things are that I want to look for to make sure that it is matched up correctly:)

Don't be too hard on yourself, we all make mistakes. They key things are (someone else chime in if I miss anything) is RAM type, as in DDR2, DDR3, etc. Speed, 1066 mhz,1333 mhz, etc. Size, 204 pins, 240 pins, etc. Voltage, 1.35v, 1.5v, etc. Capacity, (A plethora of gigabyte options per stick). And Manufacturer, a bad one can easily sell you defective RAM. If you want, you can give us your mobo model and we can find RAM for you.
 
If your matching up what's currently being used, get the info from the sticker and get the same everything brand/type/speed/voltage/timing.

"voltage"? When I've looked for RAM, I never see it on there. But this doesn't make sense. On the RAM socket on the board, it says 3.3 v RVS AMP, and then on the RAM stick itself, the number is 94v-0. How could these two numbers be different? This doesn't make sense!!!!

Excellent idea, I'll have to remember that.

"Timing"? I've heard of speed, such as MHz, but what is timing exactly. This is new to me....

So both you guys are sticking with the same brand, huh? Are there certain BAD manufacturer's that I should look out for?

CAS isnt all 4 numbers.

CAS is the amount of time it takes data when processor ask for it and gets it, in clock cycles.

You have tRCD/tRP/tRAS and Command Rate for a few.

I figured it out

I am running a c600 dell latitude

Its not worth buying new RAM for it since the upgrade is only +256MB more which is next to nothing. This wont do dittly.

And they wanted 39$ for one stick.

But I was just curious about one thing: is it DD3 ram?
I have 144 pin

The question on my threads page was not highlighted, so I assumed that no one had replied. I accidently clicked on it and found out that this was not the case. I don't understand what the highlighted ones mean.

How do I know if I got a reply on a thread?

No. C600 Latitude's take PC-133 RAM (the RAM that was out before DDR became the new standard)

The thread appears as bold when there is a new reply. Another column also lists the most recent poster to the thread and when the post was made.

You can also check the box in advanced replies and subscribe to the thread, which will email you of replys.
