What Are The System Requirements To Run Linux

I have read some of the opinions on Linux and I wonder if I could get the Linux operating system to run on my old machine with the following Specs:

Pentium I with a 1 Gig Processor (yr 2000)
128 MB Ram (Rambus ouch)
Windows ME
80 Gig HD, have only used about 20 GB max at times so I guess I have pently of space for partitioning the HD for both operating systems.

Linux looks interesting, but I'm not sure if its for me and I guess the best way would be to give it a try, if it works on my current old computer...

Which Linux Distro would you reccomend as a starting point for me?

Thanks

you could run linux EASY on that
there is a list here
http://distrowatch.com/dwres.php?resource=major
most of these will be fine (dont pay attension to the bit saying "Top 5 Beginner-Friendly Distributions")
pick something like Fedora, Suse, Debain.

Ok Thanks...One more question...

For a newbie who is quite comfortable in a windows envoirment, which of these would be the best for basic computing and the ease of learning?

Honestly, for me to pick one would be like flipping a coin at this point.

I dont play games...

Just Internet, email, Open Office, business apps, playing music etc...

Thanks

I would suggest experimenting with different desktop environments. KDE is very "pretty" but it may run a bit slow on older computers. Gnome or Fluxbox might be better.

If you are new to Linux, don’t worry too much about what I just said, just keep it in mind, the OS install is more important.

Which Distro is best for you really depends on you.

I use SuSE. I believe that it is a very good distro for both new and advance users. why not give it a try?

One time a guy said to me sarcasticlly that Linux would run on an Atari2600. He ment it'll run on anything.
Your system will run it very well.

Fedora Core is a nice distro.

If you want to familiar yourself with it get a copy of Knoppix and play with it. It's a live linux CD that runs completely off a bootable CD independently from your hard drive. You can play with it without actually installing it to see if you like it and to get a feel for it.

Whatever you do get rid of that Windows ME though!
