What Can I do On Edge and 3G?

I have a phone with the 'unlimited' data plan, and it has an Edge connection type, I was wondering if it would be sufficient for online gaming? If it is not, is 3G capable of doing so?
I was at a LAN, and the guy had hooked his 3G phone up to the connection, and most of us were online and some of us were gaming, it was a bit laggy, but quite a bit of us were on it, and some were downloading I think.

It's possible, however you will have high latency, especially with Edge and when there is a lot of activity on the tower. As far as I know though it is against the terms to tether your iPhone to a computer and use it for internet, as the plan only allows you to access the web via the phone.
 
Yeah, I'm sure a Blackberry can be tethered, since the HTC Touch can. I'll go to an AT&T store tomorrow, and check out the 3G USB stick, maybe just convert over to that something.

I know they can be tethered, both of my Samsung phones can via USB. I was stating that legally you can't tether a phone to a computer under AT&T's unlimited data plan, since that applies to PDA's and smartphones only. However I'm not too sure on the iPhone's terms and conditions, since that's the $60/mo. service you may be able to.
 
Nah, legally you can't, but I'm sure there would be a way if you were to jailbreak. Awhile ago someone released an app but it got taken almost immediately.

Legally you CAN tether your blackberry with the data plan. I do it all the time, just call them up and ask if your uncertain.
 
AT&T support would help with this?

I'll stop by my local AT&T store this week, and check out the 3G USB modem.

Going away this weekend, and I would like to have a capable internet connection for gaming, and 3G seemed reliable at the LAN, so I believe it would be just fine.

No you can't, not with a PDA/Blackberry data plan. You need to get a data plan with tethering capabilities, and even those are capped at 5GB/mo.

You will have to spend an additional $60/mo. to get the 5GB monthly data plan for either tethering, or for use with a data card.
 
I tethered my ATT tilt with 3G. Then i tried edge, i doubt you would be able to do any type of gaming on edge. Put it this way, browsing speeds on 3G was just as fast as cable, and edge was very close to dial up. I ran a speedtest on 3G, when i get home i'll see if i can find the screenshot.

I havn't tried, but i think gaming is possible on 3G, but the data usage would be insane. Tethering is capped at 5GB, i just use my unlimited data plan to tether, no limit. Of course, it may not be the "right" thing to do... but unlimited is unlimited, and ATT has no way to know if you tether... you can just tell them you've watch a ton of streaming media. lol.

However they are not going to support that kind of tethering, i wouldn't mention it. But with a data card you have to get the tethering plan anyway.

With ATT, yes you can. You just have to call them and tell them thats what you intend to do with it, no additional fees. They have a tethering plan but its for people who want their phones as a modem that dont already pay for the blackberry data plan. I use this option for my work all the time.
 
Just as a heads up if you are wondering, I went on Steam today with my phone from home on 3G and was getting ping anywhere from 250ms - 1200ms, so it isn't the best for gaming on.

Incase youve never read att's TOS:

"Furthermore, plans(unless specifically designated for tethering usage) cannot be used for any applications that tether the device (through use of, including without limitation, connection kits, other phone/PDA-to computer accessories, Bluetooth® or any other wireless technology) to Personal Computers (including without limitation, laptops), or other equipment for any purpose."

And if you have a blackberry, the unlimited plan does not include tethering, but there is a plan called the " BlackBerry® Personal + tethering" Which is $60 a month+whatever your voice plan is, and capped @5gb.
