What could reset the BIOS?

I was working on a laptop, trying to re-install windows, but the person didn't bring me the power supply, so it died before I could finish. So, I gave them exact instructions on how to do it (though they still had to call me for me to walk them through it) anyway, she got it installed, and for some reason she turned it off, then turned it back on and it gave her a blue screen. I figured it was some hardware failure.

I get the laptop back come to find that the BIOS had been reset from the changes I made to it. Besides the girl going in and resetting it herself, which she doesn't know how to do, or the battery being pulled, which I know wasn't done, what could reset the BOIS like this? I want to make sure it doesn't happen again.

The battery doesn't have to be pulled in order to reset, the battery could also be dead or dying. So it should be replaced.

Well, that's possible, by how should I go about testing that. To replace it I'd have to take the thing apart

If the machine is a few years old I would just go ahead and replace the battery. Or maybe it was just loose in the slot?

It doesn't seem old. It has a freakin 3g option. The only thing I can think that indicates its more than a couple years old is that it was packaged with xp on it. But didn't netbooks continue to run on xp a while after vista came around?

I'm assuming its at least 3 years old. But yeah there were still putting xp or vista starter on netbooks.

Hmm. Now that I think about it the battery may be dead... I'll have to shut it down and see if the BIOS resets again.
