What do you normally do with your computer? (update)

This question may have been asked before, but if so I think it's time for an update.

I'm making this a poll to see where the members like to spend their computer time which should be of interest. I think it would also be interesting to see how much time is spent on upgrading the computer which would also be interesting to devotees of computers.

If I missed a major category or something of particular interest, you're welcomed to post in so here goes:

One major category you forgot was photography. Also forgot communication. I edit my pictures on my computer. I also watch videos online and offline and play games, as well as connect with friends and family over Skype and other social media.

I'd say around 3/5 of the stuff I do on my computer is programming or programming-related (I assumed this would go under Text, though it's a bit of an ambiguous category). Rest is writing, composing music, reading, "just surfing" or uni work that doesn't fall under programming.

In addition to the above, you also forgot distributed computing, and CAD work.

Word processing is what you mean when you say text also. At least I assume so, as it is IM when you text on a computer.


Personally, I don't do any one thing on my computer. I process word documents, model things for work, run BONIC on most of them, game, and stream movies. Just depends on when, where and which computer I am using.

I do mostly browsing the net so you might want to add that to your poll.

I also download and play freeware games and utilities.

Maybe I should have simply asked if you prefer to work or play with your computer. Good thread for discussion.

That's pretty much what I do too.

I also upgrade my PC every now and then too, but it's not really a reason to buy a computer. You tend to upgrade it as and when you need to.
