I was in Staples the other day, and they had a laptop on clearance for $599 after some instant savings. It was either an HP or Gateway, im not entirely sure (they only had a short description of it, no pic). Anyways, these are the specs from what I remember:

Athlon 64 3400+
15.4" UltraBright LCD
100 or 120GB HD
1GB DDR RAM
A form of integrated ATI video
DVD Burner

So do you think this is worth $599?

considering that you didnt say anything about a battery, ill assume you just dont know how good the battery is...
plus, most lappy's are dual core nowadays. that hard drive is nice and big, but id rather have an 80gb with a core 2 duo or something...
goeff you shoudlve just kept your old lappy. it was very good... lol
anyways, personally id rather get something a little bit better for $700 or $800... with ddr2 memory just because it uses less power...
but if you just want something mobile with lots of memory and hard drive space thats a really good lappy.
probably won't play many games too well, unless you're only playing cs:s a little here and there...
ill sell you my X2 rig for $750 lol (the rig in the sig, minus the 250gig lol)
but this isnt the section for that... thats why i made a thread for it in the comp equipment for sale section..

It didnt say anything about the battery, im guessing its a 6-Cell or so. My old laptop was good, but it cost me $1300, and if I spent $1300 i could get a terrific laptop, but im not going to game on it.

I just want a laptop that I can use for basic stuff. But I want a new one, not one of the older models.

And I have a desktop already :P

I would say it's priced about right for that. I'm not sure I would buy an AMD laptop though? Problem is I don't know enough about them compared to Intel laptops when it comes to battery life.

What I DO know is if that's an HP I wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole. I don't like Gateway much, but I HATE HP/Compaq.

Don't like Compaq's ay? Never ghad a problem with mine. Granted they aren't super computers or anything...but they work and that's all I'm after :)

For $600 I think tht's a fine deal. Better than waht I got and I believe I payed more. However my Mobile Sempron probably gets better battery life, I just wish I had more RAM and better integrated video.

Now that I think of it, I think I did see this laptop out on display a month or two ago. I remember unplugging the power cord to see what it got for battery life, and I believe it was around 2.5-3 hours, but I wasnt able to tweak any settings, but I should be able to get a bit more. It was also a shiny black color, I still cant remember if it was HP or Gateway though...

So any final thoughts? I'm leaving in an hour.

No other thoughts?

You dont have to post here, just vote in the poll. I would really like some other peoples opinion on this.

I would get that laptop it looks like a good deal but the battery life may be a bit short so you might want to get another battery for it.

2+ hours is fine for me (higher is obiously better, but it doesnt matter too much). The Acer I had before with a PM in it only got about 1.5 hours of battery.

But I most likely will get a new one if its not much money.

Thanks again for your comments. I'm not buying it until 1PM (once class is over), so keep them coming :P

Do you know how fast the harddrive is. is it 4200 RPM or 5400 RPM cause the 4200 would be pretty slow i would see if it has at least a 5400 RPM in it. And how fast is the ram is is PC2700 or PC 3200 i would hope it would be PC 3200.

Hard to say yes or no because it depends upon just what you expect to use the lappy for. And it depends on just what is under the hood of the lappy. You could call the store and get the model # and google the unit and find out what is really inside. ie: If you like graphics, this one very well may have the Intel 900 card which is shared mem. For you, an dedicated card might be better. And that is just the beginning. So you really would want to scope out the unit to find out if you and "she" will be a good match. "Cuz once you jump and buy....she's all yours, Good luck, Jk

The video card i believe is integrated ATI 200m.

Im not sure of the exact specs, but i'll look at the laptop before i buy it.

I'm leaving now to go see if it works, and hopefully buy it. Wish me luck :D

Now that he has gone to get it should I tell him that it has a custom IBM drive interface, that my buddy popped his AMD by trying to overclock it and that it comes with cross-linked files so the explorer will be hogging all his CPU cycles?

Or maybe I should just tell him that the harddrive is overclockable to 7200 RPM? haha. :evil grin:

Thanks guys, but I went to the store and they sold out :(

So now im without a laptop... I had my hopes set on it too, lol

Ah shit. That really sucks man. Big time. Sorry to hear that.

Say, if you're interested Circuit City has an Acer like mine for $599 CAD. It comes with Windows, a free printer and a thumb drive. I really like my laptop. I dunno. Something to ponder.

Sorry dude. :(

That's what I have, Radeon Xpress 200m video. It's "alright", it'll suffice for light gaming. Anything beyond NFSU graphics will be a challenge. I play Kal Online, GunZ: The Duel, CS 1.6, and AVP2 just fine, all settings maxxed out. But they are older games so you get the picture.
