What does a router do?

Sooo.... I was wondering what a wireless router does. The best guess I can think of, is it connects you to the internet without using some company's internet, (comcast, yahoo etc.) Weather I am right or wrong, could someone tell me what a wireless router does?

P.S. if i get an internet connection from them, can I play multiplayer-online games such as runescape, or multiplayer COD4?

a router is used to trasmit internet signal from a modem wirelessly to a computer which has a wi-fi receiver.

wireless internet isn't the best choice if you'll be gaming because of the high pings you'll get.

well, if you want to get technical, a router "routes" information. when data comes through the lines and hits the router, the router decides where that data needs to go. the switch built into the router is what allowes more than one computer to share one connection, and the wireless access point built into a wireless router is what transmits the signal wirelessly.
