what does "x" mean on the cd-roms?

what does "x" mean on the cd-roms?
for ex:
how much is the speed of a cd rom which got 8x?

8x would be 1.2 mebibytes

The "x" refers to the speed of the media, and the transfer rate is different when you compare say, an 8x CD-R to an 8x DVD-R.

New one for me, last I heard the kilobyte referred to 1,024bytes.

Even so, you cant find how fast the media being transferred is, since the speeds vary with CD's and DVD's.
