What free antivirus to people currently recommend?

I'm currently using AVG, I've been using it for a while and just upgraded it to 2011. It seems pretty well featured, with an ID Protection module and a Link Scanner and all that, but I think it might be pretty CPU intensive and it seems to be very insistent that it is updated every 4 hours, and a full system restore point created when it updates.

My dad has recently switched to Avast from AVG and he finds it 'better' but can't really come up with a proper explanation as to why he thinks it is better. There seem to be so many different ones out there and I'm sure each year they are updated with new features so people's opinions on which is the best one change. There's no way I have the time to download and test each one so I was wondering what people's opinions were.

I'd post a poll, but I've no idea how to decide what to include in the poll.

I use avast free. Never had a problem with it. Don't waste money on McAfee or any other expensive one, I would usually say stay away from Norton but the new 2011 one I've heard is much better than their previous AVs. Kaspersky are apparently quite good, as are AVG/Avira. WSE is adequate, but there are better choices out there.

I had avg 2011 and decided to change to avast for the simple reason that it wants to reboot the pc after every update and continues to nag you every hour until you do. And you will have to totally uninstall it in order to run a specific program designed to remove hidden malware.

Avg totally sucks now in my opinion.

I think we need a sticky on free AV products and have a poll on it so people can quicky see what is the favorite and people can post their reasons why. This question gets asked way too much.

I like MSE and ClamAV. Clam is nice because it is free for corporations and will install on servers.

I run linux :)

But when I do boot into windows, I have Avast free on my laptop and Security Essentials on my desktop.

I used AVG for many years. Ended up with 2011 version.

My Outlook (2007) came to a halt and by elimination it was AVG that was causing the problem. Removed it and downloaded MSE. Problem solved and a much smaller programme. It updates itself unseen and unsung. Hoorah!
