Hi,

Can someone recomend me what graphics card to buy?

I havnt realy got a set budget as i will decide upon the price on the graphics card itself.
But i would like my new graphics card to be either 128mb or 256mb. (But i would prefer 256.)

Im unsure if my Graphics card would be AGP or Sli so can someone please take a look at my mobo which is a Asus A7V8X-LA.
There is a picture of my Mobo on the link below -

Looks like an AGP, a good card would be the 9600XT 256MB if you dont want to spend much, or a 6800GT 256MB if money isnt much of an object.

By the way, theres more to a video card then how much memory it has.

id say it would play it, but not on max settings, the geforce 6800GT shouldplay on max settings , my friend just bought one for his agp comp and it runs most to all of his new games flawlessly he also has 1 gb of ram
id get the geforce 6800GT if u really want good performance, its not that much money.

it would play, but most likely on lowest settings... maybe a couple medium settings. 9600 is so old, it doesnt support latest shader models or any goodies like that.
the x700 is pretty cheap, i believe, and it offers great performance for the price.

Hey thanks for replying,

What do you think the chances of that card playing games like Doom 3 on my pc (On sighniture) if i also added 1Gig of ram?
Thanks

I will run but I would not want to use it for Doom 3. First time I played Doom 3 was with my 9600 Pro. The XT is faster but not enough it would make that much diff. in such a game. Anyway yes the game ran but was so choppy it gave me headaches it where terrible. That was however with graphics turned up (no not highest obviously but not lowest either).

If you want to play such games consider at least a 6600GT or 6800GT.

Edit:

9600 XT is a legend....u should buy it

First... Welcome to Computer Forum. Second... ?????

Would definately recommend a 6800GT - got one myself last year and it's everything I need. I bought it for Doom III and now I'm running Quake4 on it.

The 9600 ATI card is a budget card. I wouldn't call it legendary - it's a derivitive of the 9500, which was legendary 2 years ago, but doesn't exactly cut the mustard anymore for games like Doom III. The new 6800GS is better value than the 6800GT and doesn't perform that much less so might be a good choice if your budget doesn't stretch to the GT, or if you have trouble finding a GT (nVisdia don't make the chip for it anymore).

not fear though.....

that is an awesome card

Agreed. If your budget won't stretch any further, a 6600GT is a great choice. If it will, a 6800GS is probably better value than the 6800GT, as the performance is similar at a significantly cheaper price.

If even the 6600GT is out of your price range, the 9600Pro/XT is a good budget card, but possibly not worth the upgrade depending on what you have now. It will struggle with newer games.

Also, I wouldn't worry about getting 256MB of video memory with either the 9600Pro/XT or 6600GT. The cards are simply not powerful enough to take advantage of large amounts of memory (particularly the 9600 series), and the performance difference is very slight, with a significantly higher cost.

Is it just me, or was his first post not mentioning a game, and then people repleyed saying it would play on lowest settings....
