What is a dual hard disk drive docking station?

Greetings,
I saw something I've never seen before today at a brick-and-mortar retail computer store. It was a dual hard-drive docking station. It was simply a small docking pedestal in which two internal hard disk drives stood upright in. Can someone explain to me what the purpose of such a thing is?
Thanks

Simply put, it's just a way to attach an internal drive as an external drive. Most of the time they're used so you can pull data off the drive. Or you can use it as an external hard drive. Some even have the ability to run RAID so if you have a machine that ran a RAID array like RAID 0, you could set it up to read from the array and still get your data.
